Your Open Question: USC bound? Question from an anxious student :)?

*** I am currently getting tutored in SAT Mathematics privately. My score is expected to break 700 this time around, as I was having an off-day last time. I am also taking a private SAT course for writing and reading.

I plan on taking the US History, Math Level 1, and Literature subject tests in October.

Alright, well I think that covers everything. I may have forgotten some things. Anyway, if anyone here has any knowledge of the school, let me know what kind of shot you think I have of getting accepted! What are my chances of being accepted at Brown University?
Your activities seem great. You aren't like the other applicants who have somewhat random activities. You seem to be really strong in music, especially singing, and you are also very accomplished. That's good. The bad part is, you only have a few more opportunities to take both the SAT I and your SAT Subject Tests. With you current SAT I scores, you will not get in, just because it appears that you really are not strong at math or english, two essential parts of education. A 700 in each section may not cut it either. The median for a school like Brown is probably around 2160-2190 (average of 720 to 730 per section). Bear in mind that the people below this median can be legacies, athletes or minorities. That means that if you are lacking those things, you really need a 2220-2250 to be in the ball park. THat means you need to average 740 to 750 in each section. THat is a bit drastic of a change from your current scores, but if you can do it, you put yourself in range for the school. In addition, you have to make sure all of those SAT subject tests (maybe you can get away with just 2) are above 750. I think your activities and GPA are great, but your standardized test scores CAN keep you out of a school. What are my chances of being accepted at Brown University?
Overachiever huh? LOL. Okay. Well I say that your chances are excellent. You're very involved with everything. You seem to be a great student and are very well rounded. I'd say you're chances are very good. Good job. What are my chances of being accepted at Brown University?
everything looks good. those sat scores don't seem to reflect everything else. you make yourself sound smart. those scores don't.
your chances sound really good..i'd retake the SAT..other than that you're pretty much covered.

Not good - maybe 50-50 at the best. You will however get into a UC FOR SURE. Just maybe not the one of your choice. Last year all qualified applicants got into one. You are qualified if you got a 3.0 GPA and have reasonable SAT's - which you have.

However, although all the UC's are good, make no mistake about that, it is still quite possible to get stuck in huge freshman classes taught by graduate students. Not my ideal of a great college experience. You may like to consider some other schools such as the colleges that change lives:

The school probably has it's average test scores and GPA somewhere on it's website. UCSC isn't particularly selective so you probably have a solid shot of getting in.

My sister, when she applied, got in with a 1020 SAT (on the old one, out of 1600). She didn't do any sports, but was in a couple clubs and took a couple AP classes.

So I would say your chances are very good. Are you considering applying to other UC's like Davis or Irvine also? What Are My Chances of getting into UC Santa Cruz?
Your chances are pretty high. Despite your low gpa, your hard classes and e.c helps. Santa Cruz isnt really a selective school.

What are my chances of getting into UC Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, or Davis?
I'd say you've got a really good shot at Santa Cruz. You definitely have a chance at the others though. The only problem you have is that you did a lot of skipping around in your extracurriculars. Colleges like to see consistency. You will definitely want to include in your personal statement the fact that you had to switch around schools. Perhaps you could write about that in the second prompt, as an experience that you value. A good essay could make or break your entrance into Davis,.

I don't think you have a shot at Berkeley, LA, or San Diego...but you could also try Irvine, Riverside, and Merced. Merced would be a great alternative to Davis if you end up not getting in.
Good chances at all, although your GPA is very low.

To answer your question.. UCLA and UCB would be difficult for you to gain entry to, but it's CERTAINLY possible. What are my chances of getting into UC Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, or Davis?
Good chance at UCSC. Iffy chance at UCSB and UCD.
With a 3.31 weighted GPA, I would have to say that your chances are very slight. The usual rule of thumb is that you need a minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA to get into a UC, with exceptions coming for those with really high SAT or ACT scores. What are my chances of getting into UC Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, or Davis?
I would like to reply to the girl who posted above me. A unweighted 3.5 is not necessary at all. last year, every applicant who met the minimum requirements got into at least one of the UCs. So ignore her answer. A unweighted 3.5 would be needed for schools like UCLA, Berkley, and UCSD. I would say that you'll probably get into UCSC but I'm not too sure on SB and Davis. Though you still have a shot.

Id really really really really like to go here and i will be applying to the Tisch School. Please let me know what i can do at this point to better my chances? anything at all would be greatly appreciated. What are my chances at getting into NYU?
Your credentials are really good. I'd say you are pretty much in. Although NYU has gotten a little harder in the past few years. By the way, if you are a junior you are well on your way, but if you are a senior I don't think you have too much to worry about. Maybe you should try Columbia University too, I hear that they have a program with Julliard, although it is a little more competitive. But hey, the worst either of these schools can say is no, so apply!

    3. University of Virginia

    4. University of Michigan

    5. Tufts University

    6. Boston College

    7. SUNY Binghamton

    8. Lehigh University

    9. Georgetown (only because i could get a alumni/scholarship sponsor recommendation)

    10. Vanderbilt University

I do have some safety schools, which i will look into later on.

Currently, my SAT scores are very low around 1900s, but it will definitely go up in October, i can guarantee 2000+ or even 2100.

I know that if i want to go to a competitive school, i should have all As, but for me, English was a big problem. I came from Korea in 5th grade, and graduated Middle school here. I understand that i should have mastered the English language by now, but education wise, it was very difficult. Speaking however, was no problem whatsoever. I lost my accent as soon as the beginning of 7th grade.

    Some of my awards are...

    - my high school scholars award

    - a bronze medal in Science Olympiad, placed 3rd among 15 different schools, each having about 20-40 members.

    - national honors society

    Dance team

part of the JV volleyball team 9th and 10th

part of the Varsity track team in 11th

Project friendship - basically tutoring in 11th

and i will continue some of these clubs, if not join more in 12th grade

My weighed GPA right now is a 3.7, which is an A-

but i know that it should be well over 4.0 and i am willing to work hard the beginning of my senior year until i apply.

I can also get many recommendations from my AP teachers and Math teacher, and I want to major in either med, or something to do with math and science.

I also dance, sing and create albums as my hobbie.

I plan to send them one of my albums to show them that i am serious about my music.

Right now, as i write all this info down, i feel like im reaching for the stars here. Up until now, i thought that having an A- average is pretty solid. but looking at the individual grades of my classes, some of them went up, yet some of them went down. Please help me, and let me know my real chances. don't hesitate to be harsh, so i can wake up and do better. Also take into account that i didn't understand "literal english" well until about 9th grade.

I know that Duke is a HIGHLY competitive college, and i know that my chances of getting in are very slim. But it is my dream school, and i really really want to get in.

Anyone who's currently a student at Duke or any of the schools that i've listed up there except for Binghamton, Lehigh, and Boston college, will you please let me know how you did it?

i honestly, feel like i should have listened to my parents more and not have gone out so much. it feels good to be with friends until you realize you're almost at the end.

i apologize if this is so long and it gets boring.

thank you so much and let me know please!!

xxCan i get into Duke, UNC chapel Hill, UVA, UMICH, Tufts, Georgetown?
I agree with Bill. You are in for a wake-up call. Can i get into Duke, UNC chapel Hill, UVA, UMICH, Tufts, Georgetown?
I would recommend working on writing skills for admissions essays if for no better reason than to improve your ability to write, but other than that, you should be at the very least competitive for entrance into all the schools you listed. Can i get into Duke, UNC chapel Hill, UVA, UMICH, Tufts, Georgetown?
Looking at your list of colleges, I'd say Duke would probably be very difficult to get into, as you've mentioned. But if you write really good admissions essays, there might be a chance. UVA, Georgetown, and Vanderbilt will also be difficult from what I've heard and their admission rates. It's true that your grades from the past 3 years are not as good as they could have been, but there's nothing you can do about it now. So definitely work hard 1st semester senior year, since colleges will require those grades to be sent to them. Your extracurricular activities show leadership and include sports and academics, so that's a plus for you.

If Duke is definitely your first-choice school, consider applying early decision, but also know that the pool of applicants for early decision is more competitive than that of regular decision.

As someone who just went through the college admissions process this past year, I understand your worries. Work hard, and best of luck! :)
All those schools will be quite difficult for you ie they will be reach schools. Not impossible - but a low probability. You have far too many B's for schools like that - especially in grade 11 which is a key year they look at.

    Thanks

    Bill

Which college will I get into?

I know this is a really absurd question since there are so many factors to consider. But I'm currently a high school junior and it's really that time of the year when I'm loaded with SAT I, SAT II's, and AP's--and I just want to know what are my chances so far.

I currently have a 94 average (unweighted), I've been in all the possible honors classes my school offers, and I have taken plus what I am taking 4 AP classes (and 5 AP tests, because I'm not enrolled in one of the classes), I'm the school yearbook editor, a committee member of our school's honors society, a member of our school's spanish honors society, I've been tutoring physics for my school's principal (since he teaches a physics class) for two years and will continue until I graduate, I am an editor of our school's bilingual newspaper, I participated in the New York City Math Fair and got a silver medal, I participated in the New York Science and Engineering Fair and received a first place award in my category, I am part of a science research institute for a year and will continue until I graduate, I am a member of our school's chorus, a member of the Red Cross Club, and a finalist of the NY International Music competition.

Next year I'm planning to take 4 AP's (Economics, Computer Science, Calculus, and Physics C) and finance related electives.

For work experience I've been a co-manager at a prep school, hiring teachers, tutoring students, and handling financial issues. I was the highest paid employee there yet the youngest.

I know there college acceptance is really unpredictable sometimes and from year to year, it's different. It also depends on which high school I go to (which I would prefer not to disclose, although it in the top 20 in the country). It also depends on your interview, SAT/ACT, essays, etc, which is in the future. But I just want to know if I have a shot right now.

I'd like to major in business and management, especially advertising and media related. So I'm hoping to get into Upenn's Wharton School of Business. But it is one of the MOST selective schools in the country so I understand it's going to be tough. I'm also looking into a few of the other Ivies, including Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Columbia. But these are all very selective so I know I'm aiming too high. But I'm also looking into MIT Sloan School, Carnegie Mellon, or Duke.

I just want to know if I have a shot at any of these. Thank you so much!Which college will I get into?
WOW i cant tell u which school u can get into because i never thought of going to those school but thats awesome u must be a very hardworking individual. thats really impressive. don't think u are going have a problem. but just a thought how about a a university abroad there better than the schools in the US well that could be relative just a thought.Which college will I get into?

You can make it to Stanford if you're Black and you play D1 football.
You didn't mention your GPA or class rank, which are more important than SAT scores and ECs.

So if you're in the top 10% you've got a good chance, or top 20% still feasible.

  • What can I do to increase my chances of getting into NCSSM?

Freshman year for me is almost over and soon it'll be sophomore year and I'll be beginning my NCSSM application. Usually I am very confident about me being able to get in, but lately I've seen more and more impressive qualifications from people that have applied before. Of course it worried and intimidated me a bit, but I figured since I have a bit of time to get more done before I apply that maybe you guys could help me figure out what else I need to get on track.

First off, I go to Howard Health and Life Sciences High School. Really small, not hard to get into, but a bit of a challenge for most to succeed in. But thanks to my middle school foundation at SFCMS, I can manage quite well. However, going here limits the types of classes I can take. And many kids get accepted that don't wanna be there and they disrupt the flow and I feel I need more of a challenge with a more select group of hard working individuals as my classmates.

    G.P.A. 4.7

I am in CD7, how competitive is that?

I have taken the PSAT but haven't gotten my scores back yet, however I think I did very well.

    Last semester I took:

    Honors English I - 99 and 91/4 on EOC

    Algebra 1 -96 and a 97/4 on the EOC

Computer Apps I- 98 and 98/2 on VOCATS

    PE/Health- 100

    This semester:

Honors Geometry- Around a 96 at the moment

Honors English II- a 98 at the moment

Honors World History- a 99 and a 99 on the midterm

MWD or Comp. Apps II- around a 98 right now.

I'm taking Latin II online this summer and took Latin I in 8th grade for a high school credit.

    Next year I'll be taking:

Hnrs Earth/Environmental Science, Hnrs Biology, Hnrs English III, Hnrs Algebra II, and two different college courses at FTCC: HEC and ACA

And hopefully I'll be approved to take Latin III hnrs online! :)

    Clubs:

I have participated in Sciene Olympiad since the 6th grade. In 8th grade I received a gold medal in Pentathlon, and two silvers in Under Pressure and Meteorology at Regionals. At state I placed 8th in Under Pressure.

This year I placed first in Towers, third in Microbe Mission, and fourth in Ecology. These were three medals out of the four that my school had. I will be going on individually to state for Tower.

    Extracurriculars:

I have played rec soccer since the third grade and this fall and spring I have helped coach soccer for rec and used that as my volunteer hours.

I have volunteered more than 20 hours at the Cliffdale Public Library. I volunteered around 13 and a half hours at the FAPS Animal Haven. And so far coaching indoor soccer I have accumulated 3 hours.

I also help tutor when EOCs get near and people are scrambling to get ready for it.

I am a student in SR-AHEC'S T.E.A.C.H. program. We meet once a month on a Thursday for a two hour lesson about the human body. I went a very beneficial college tour to Atl with them a few weeks ago.

Recently, I have been accepted in the JSA Summer Program at Georgetown University. It's very prestigous but a bit expensive. Nonetheless, I fully intend to attend it this summer.

I am helping a friend of mine create a very nice Music Club, I'm hoping to create a Debate Club at my own school, and I plan, create, and lead many student-run study sessions. I don't like to run for SGA at my school, because its mostly a popularity contest and not everyone likes people that don't let them copy off their work (me). I am also a Peer Mediator for my class, which means that I helps regulate the drama and rumors that go around and make sure that we can stop cat fights before they happen and help people not get their feelings hurt.

At Howard, I have discovered that I plan to go to a big time college, get accepted into a good medical school and study to go into Oncology research, and/or Biomedical research. Even if the money isn't really there. However, I also plan to do some EMS for a while for extra money, plus it fascinates me :) And my third plan has always been to fly the helicopter as a Paramedic and I think that is something very easy for me to achieve. However, since I am so good at writing, medical journalism or just any kind of journalism is another fall back plan I have. I plan to make my future options like mentioned above very clear in my application.

I'm great at math and science, and a am a great writer too. What else can I do to improve my chances of getting in?What can I do to increase my chances of getting into NCSSM?
I'm a sophomore and I just found out that I was accepted today. Your GPA looks excellent and your classes look strong. I would recommend taking precalculus before the end of sophomore year and maybe getting in an extra science, though it looks like that might be difficult at this point. The whole point of districts is so that population is balanced; therefore I would worry about whether our not you're from a populated city. When you write essays, do NOT list unless you have no room. Try to make your essays in paragraph format and elaborate on and play up your achievements. If you do create debate club, that is an excellent thing to put on your essays. Also, though they look for science and math achievements primarily, writing is very important as well. Good luck, hope this helped!

How can I get my parents to appreciate me?

i am 14 years old and I am sick and tired of my parents treating me like garbage and treating my brother like a god. I get good grades, i am the captain of my soccer team, i have made countless honours choirs, including All-State choir, which over 600 kids tried out and only 160 kids in the entire state are chosen and i was one of those kids. I am a good kid. my room is overflowing with awards and medals and trophies in everything from music to sports. I do all of this but i still get treated like crap. The only thing my brother is travel soccer, which i quit because of my pursuit in a musical career.I just don't understand. When i sing, people come up to me with tears in their eyes telling me how my voice is beautiful but my parents just turn the other cheek. all the other kids at school love my voice and im asked to sing for them all the time, but my parents seem to care more about my brothers soccer, which by the way, im better at soccer than he is, than all of my accomplishments. can you please help me because it seems like no matter what i do, i can't make my parents happyHow can I get my parents to appreciate me?
Honestly, in my opinion, you sound like you get plenty of praise. Your friends, even strangers praise you from what you've said. Ever think how hard it is for your brother, knowing that you are 'much more successful' as you say? I think you need to do some growing up. I know that sounds harsh, but the world's harsh. You need to do things for you, not for someone else's praise. Plus, you're definitely confident in yourself, so maybe they want to focus on your brother to make sure he doesn't have confidence issues.
No. 1 Step down off that pedestal your puuting yourself on;you're just waiting for someone to come along and knock you off, and you're going to hit the ground hard when they do.

No. 2 I would almost bet money your brother is quite a bit younger than you, I'm going to assume that's the case.

Some children, especially young ones, need more attention and praise than others. Did you ever stop being p***ed off long enough to think that maybe your parents feel you're well enough developed to not need their support as much? If that's the case you should take that as an implication of trust and respect, which is a far cry from being treated like crap. How can I get my parents to appreciate me?
Maybe its because u get attention from your friends because u r very succesful, but because ur brother is not so succesful they think he needs more attention
Well the best way is to talk to them, tell them that you feel your being blanked. Tell them you feel upset and you feel your being left out. You both sound like good people and perhaps they just want to boost his confidence because his brother is more successful? And perhaps, just perhaps your being a little bit paranoid.

P.S Do you have youtube clips of you singing? I'd like to hear you sing. How can I get my parents to appreciate me?
Wow! That must be pretty hard for you. I really can't think of why they are like this to you! I think you really need to talk to your parents about how you are feeling. Maybe they'll start to show more aprreciation for you or explain why they are being so cold. Maybe they pity your brother because you are more succesful than him!

    x
well id talk to them and tell your parents you feel like crap..... ask them if theres anything they don't like that your doing
Maybe they think if they praise you too much your brother will feel really sad and they are trying to prevent that. Talk to them and tell them how you feel. If nothing comes of it at least you got it off your chest.
Why do you think there is such a difference? You both seem like very successful children I would think they would be proud of both of you.

Can you please correct my essay (oscar peterson)?

    “I play as a feel.”

    -Oscar Peterson

Oscar Peterson, a Canadian jazz pianist has amused the world with his talent over the piano for more than 40 years. At an age of five, he became skilled at the piano and the trumpet and at the age of seven, he mainly concentrated on the piano.

He was born on August 15, 1925 in Montreal, Québec with a family of four siblings. Their parents, Daniel and Kathleen have taught music to their children in an amazing way.

Oscar Peterson became a famous piano teacher in Montreal who as well as taught many other well-known Canadian jazz musicians. With his brilliant techniques, Oscar Peterson was introduced to an American jazz producer, Norman Granz over a local radio station in Alberta. Norman Granz asked Oscar Peterson to perform at New York to play as a surprised guest. He delighted the audience and therefore his relationship with Norman Granz began.

Oscar Peterson had suffered a serious stroke which weakened his left side and had kept him away from his career for 2 years. But, he fought the stroke and began his career once again. Oscar Peterson has created more than 70 albums and worked hard to achieve this.

His music has been known by surprising number of awards, as well as numerous Junos, Grammys and a Genie. In 1987, Oscar Peterson carries the George Peabody Medal along with several other international and national honoursCan you please correct my essay (oscar peterson)?

Do I have what it takes to get into a good college?

I'm getting a little unnerved about my future and all, so I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice when it comes to what it takes to get into college, especially a good one (i.e. Ivy League, Stanford, Duke). It isn't my ultimate goal to get into any particular school just for the name it might have. Obviously this is what it is going to look like but I just have always set such high goals for myself and I feel that I owe it to myself to challenge myself by trying to get into a college that might not be as easy as any other college. That's just what I want to do and I hope it doesn't offend anyone that doesn't share my same views when it comes to college.

I'm only going to be a sophomore but I just want to know if what I've been doing my Freshman year is good enough and if I should just keep doing what I'm doing.

I have a 4.0 GPA (I always have throughout my entire life at school). I am ranked number one in my class out of 34 students (I know it is EXTREMELY small. I attend a small Catholic Private school in a really small town in Northwest Louisiana) and the school only offers one or two AP course in the Junior year. I've won several awards at academic competitions including Literary Rally, Louisiana School Mathematics Competition, and first place in the Catholic Daughters Art competition. I won Academic All-Star (given to the student who excels the most in all classes of that year) and made A Honor Roll.

I was voted the President of my Freshmen Class and Class Favorite (which doesn't really matter I just think it proves that I'm not some hermit that stays in and studies and doesn't socialize, and I feel colleges want someone that knows how to interact with other students). I am also a Representative on our school's Student Council, in which I helped organize two functions for Teacher and Faculty Appreciation weeks. I am in FBLA, YACA (Art Club), Drama Club, Campus Ministries (a club that organizes my school's religious functions such as Mass and other things) and I am the Secretary for the 4-H Club. 4-H is the club I consider my passion and I participate in countless things that have to do with this particular club and have won many awards in talent shows and exhibits displaying my art.

I have played piano for 9 years and participated in the Federation of Music Clubs for 8 years, all of which I have earned a Superior + rating. Music is something that I truly love and am learning to play the guitar and I write many songs on the piano myself.

I am a member of the Golf Team, but as a Freshmen I didn't get much play time. I love sports but I am not that athletic (I think you probably guessed that, from all that I have written I sound like quite the nerd). But anyway this usually forces to me to be the spectator as opposed to the player. This is pretty embarrassing to admit but I should be honest obviously.

I am very active in community service projects and have participated in many particular projects collecting, shoes, food, clothing, toys, and other things for the less fortunate and those affected by the hurricanes in Southern Louisiana.

I haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet (I did take the ACT in the 7th grade and earned the Grand Medal Award for earning one of the highest scores in the state, a 23, and the scores predicted that I would make at least a 30 in high school.

Well thank you to anyone who took the long time to read all that. I tend to drone on a lot. I apologize haha! Thank you so much for your advice :)Do I have what it takes to get into a good college?
YES YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES!!!

    Good Luck.
Yes. Though wonder about your non-book smarts if you're seriously questioning if a 4.0 student plus all the EC has what it takes to get into a good college.Do I have what it takes to get into a good college?
good grades, but it really depends on the college you are looking at, but to be safe get really good grades.
you sound like an amazing student you should be able to get into almost any collegeDo I have what it takes to get into a good college?
wow. i'm jealous lol. if i were you i wouldnt be worried at all
You don't need to apologize for wanting to get into an ivy league school. Anyone in their right mind would take a place if it was offered to them. What you have to remember is that almost everyone applying for IL schools will have the obligatory 4.0 and a slew of extracurricular activities healing lepers or whatever as well as memberships in YACA and FABLA or whatever at their school. You need all that just to have a shot. The people who get accepted (and the competition for places is incredibly fierce) have achieved something over and above whatever's on offer at their school. You need to start thinking about what you can do to make yourself stand out from the crowd, something that shows initiative, originality and commitment, particularly if it has some relevance to what you are intending to study. Bon chance.

Odetta was more than just a singer. She used her classically trained voice and some guitar playing to channel the colorful and sometimes deeply sad stories that make up American folk music. Odetta influenced generations of musicians and became an icon in the civil rights struggle. She died on December 2, 2008, after battling heart disease. She was 77 years old.

Odetta's voice sang for many. The highly praised folk singer gave life to the songs of working people and slaves, farmers and miners, housewives and washerwomen, African Americans and whites. She didn't just sing the notes in the songs. Odetta "became" the people in the songs and performed as though she felt what they felt.

"What distinguished [Odetta] from the start was the 鈥?care with which she tried to re-create the feeling of her folk songs [when she performed],'' Time magazine wrote in 1960.

Odetta's life began in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1930. She moved with her family to Los Angeles, California, when she was 6 years old. Odetta started studying music when she was 13 and later studied opera singing at Los Angeles City College, where she became interested in folk music. She came to prominence in the folk music world in the 1950s.

Odetta had not lived the lives of the people in her songs, but she was interested in their stories.

"I'm not a real folk singer,'' Odetta told The Washington Post in 1983. "I don't mind people calling me that, but I'm a musical historian. I'm a city kid who has admired an area and who got into it. I've been fortunate. With folk music, I can do my teaching and preaching 鈥?. ''

Odetta used music to preach messages of hope, justice, and humanity during the civil rights movement in the 1960s. She encouraged African Americans to take pride in themselves. In August 1963, she sang a song called "I'm on My Way" at the historic March on Washington, the civil rights demonstration where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

During this time, folk music was experiencing a boom. Singers like Harry Belafonte, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan began performing and recording songs in which they expressed their views on civil rights and other issues of the day. They and many other folk superstars were influenced by Odetta.

"The first thing that [got me into] folk singing was Odetta," Dylan said in 1978.

Odetta released album after album of songs. She was considered for Grammys in the 1960s and as recently as 2005. In 1999, she was honored with a National Medal of the Arts. President Bill Clinton said her career showed "us all that songs have the power to change the heart and change the world.''

In spite of her failing health, Odetta performed 60 concerts in the last two years. Her singing ability never diminished. Neither did her enthusiasm for singing. In 1983, she said that for her, music was still a way to express hope and grief.

"There's always something to sing about," Odetta said. Can you pleases help me summarize this ( 10 pts)?
The first thing you want to do, in order to make this easier for you, is to summarize each paragraph seperately from each other. If the paragraph is small, you can merge it with the following or preceding paragraph as well. Try to break the main points of the paragraph into one or maybe two sentances. Personally, I would leave out irrelevant quotes (like the one in the third paragraph). Additionally, you want to keep everything flowing and chronological.

For the first paragraph I would put:

Odetta, an influential singer/songwriter and civil rights activist, Died on December 2, 2008.

For the second paragraph I would put:

Using her voice as a social motivator, Odetta brought the hard-boiled atmosphere of the 1950's to life.

Anyway, I hope this helps. I don't want to do you're homework for you. I just want to show you how to do it on your own. You'll feel better about it I think :DCan you pleases help me summarize this ( 10 pts)?

I appreciate any comments that will help me to get in this IVY LEAGUE school. My chances at Columbia University?
Wow, your grades are good. Seems to me like you have a great chance of getting into your Ivy league school. Ivy league people don't really care for people who have all A's, they care for people who are willing to work hard.

If you want to differentiate yourself from the other applicants, consider consider getting your application essay edited. That might help. Non profit companies such as Felicity Motivational Group offer quality essy editing at a low price.

Good luck!My chances at Columbia University?
Sounds like you have a pretty good shot, although it would be better if you could raise your SAT even higher than 2100. Truthfully, the 1810 first time was rather low for Columbia; even 2100 is pushing it a bit.

Your GPA is really good. Do you know it relatively to others in your school? i.e. your ranking. [It might help if you had more APs, but your schedule looks decent.]

Your awards and extracurriculars are good. (Have you been at those clubs/activities for 2-3 years? Top colleges like to see commitment to whatever you're doing.)

Community service - not sure. I barely had any, by which I mean to say 20ish hours one summer.

(By the way, this is coming from someone who got into Columbia College of Columbia University, also regular decision, although I chose to go to a different college. My stats were ~97.9 GPA, 2340 SAT, 8 APs, ~20 hrs community service, 3-4 years at a few clubs [board games, book club, etc], good internship one summer.)

Good luck! Hope you get in.

There is a wealth of information from actual students who attend the colleges you are looking into here: http://www.studentsreview.com

Detailed surveys that provide Information on what it takes to get in, social life, academics, etc from both current students of the college and recent alumni. This is much more informative than other sites I have reviewed.
you have a pretty good chance. remember there are more ivy leauges than just harvard and yale. essays are important. structure! you will be fine. just relaxWhat are my chances for Ivy League admittance?
You shouldn't even have to ask this, this is above and beyond! Yes you can as long as you don't blow your essays off.

You don't need to be in athletics to get in, from looking at everything you've done, you'll definitely get in.
I don't know if the criteria applied to international applicants and US applicants are the same. I am from Turkey, from a very selective high school. My friends have been accepted to Harvard, Yale Princeton etc with much much less than these.

However, I don't think invitation letters for People to People meetings etc count. It had become a joke in our school since everyone had got the letters but no one even considered to participate. What are my chances for Ivy League admittance?
Wow... Yea, I know nerds, and you're a nerd for sure.

I think you have a great shot, not only to the Ivies, but to other great schools around America, like Duke, UChicago, WashU, Berkley, Rice, etc., etc.

And if you're a minority, well, even better. :D But that really doesn't matter so much with your credentials.

Yea, as long as your essays are on par, I'm sure you'll go very far.

In regards to "ARE THESE SOCIETIES/OPPORTUNITIES WORTHWHILE?" the answer is "no" unless they're free. Colleges know which programs you have to pay $2000 dollars for, and they know that they aren't as selective as they claim. In general, if you have to pay to put something on your resume, it's not worth it.

I hope I can someday find out which university you attend!! Good luck!
